Sharon Creech, EL Konigsburg and Jerry Spinelli seemed to have a corner on contemporary, realistic fiction at the time. I went back and looked over the lists of Newbery gold and silver medal winners from the late 1990s up through today to compare and contrast. Reading Surviving the Applewhites again, some ten years (and hundreds of kid's books later) Tolan's book feels a bit dated, and not just for the mentions of Miatas and Walkmans, but because of the ways that this genre of children's literature has expanded and changed in the last decade. I know that I read and enjoyed Surviving the Applewhites some ten years ago, but I don't remember what the other members of the book group thought of it. I think my favorite group was the Newbery Book Club, which was usually chock full of very creative, very bright girls ages 8 - 11. At one point I ran book clubs for Magic Tree House, Goosebumps, American Girl and Newbery Books as well as a weekly pajama story time. One the best parts of my job at the bookstore when I first started in 1995 was the opportunity I had to create and run various book clubs for kids and the occasional clubs for adults. Narration Ĭather chose a first-person narrator because she felt that novels depicting deep emotion, such as My Ántonia, were most effectively narrated by a character in the story. The name is pronounced as it would be in Czech. Jim thinks of her as his close friend, my Ántonia. The story is told by her friend Jim, who arrives there at age ten to live with his grandparents. The title refers to Ántonia, a young woman immigrant to the western prairies of the US. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. This novel is considered Cather's first masterpiece. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions on both children, affecting them for life. The novel tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century. My Ántonia ( / ˈ æ n t ə n i ə/ AN-tə-nee-ə) is a novel published in 1918 by American writer Willa Cather, considered one of her best works. He runs errands while thinking about the girl of his dreams, Susana. In the past narrative, Pedro Paramo is a young farmer. Walking through the town, they are sent by a spectral woman to find Dona Eduviges Dyada, a friend of Dolores. Abundio reveals that Pedro is also his father, so the two men are brothers. They arrive in the town to discover that Comala is an abandoned ghost town and that Pedro has been dead for many years. Juan travels to Comala, meeting a donkey driver named Abundio Martinez. She makes her son promise to go to Comala to find Pedro Paramo, revealing that Pedro is Juan’s father. In the present narrative, Juan’s mother Dolores is dying. The second is set in the past, in which Pedro Paramo gains control of the town of Comala by terrorizing the inhabitants. The first is set in the present, in which Juan Preciado searches for his long-lost father, Pedro Paramo. Broadly, the novel is split into two parts. The story frequently switches between time, place, and narrators, while the plot is composed of 68 “fragments” that take place in and around the Mexican rural town of Comala. The narrative of Pedro Paramo is told in a non-linear fashion. This guide uses the 2014 Serpent’s Tail edition, translated into English by Margaret Sayers Peden.Ĭontent Warning: The novel contains portrayals of rape, domestic violence, and death by suicide throughout. In the wake of Wilson Fisk's violent and visceral last act, it's a new era for New York and the Man Without Fear! With a groundbreaking creative team returning to usher in an all-new chapter, Matt Murdock has no choice but to leave behind everything he's ever known, and ELEKTRA is the last vestige of his former life. The British biographer argues that despite Louis XIV's historical reputation as a sex fiend with a court teeming with mistresses, in fact he was a religious man who valued intelligence, wit and loyalty in his women. The traditions and structures that elevated Louis XIV would crash down on his great-great-great grandson.įraser's book focuses on the women who adored a monarch who clearly did not struggle with his self-esteem. It was the Sun King (1638-1715) who set himself up as the all-powerful constellation around which his court, his queen and his mistresses rotated. You could call Fraser's new book, Love and Louis XIV: The Women in the Life of the Sun King, a sort of prequel. In her new film Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola presents the doomed queen and King Louis XVI as mere humans crushed by a monarchy deformed by artificiality and ossified tradition.Ĭoppola's film is based on Antonia Fraser's 2001 biography, Marie Antoinette: The Journey. Some say that the place was bewitched during the early days of the Dutch settlement others, that an old Indian chief, the wizard of his tribe, held his powwows there before the country was discovered by Master Hendrick Hudson. A small brook murmurs through it and, with the occasional whistle of a quail or tapping of a woodpecker, is almost the only sound that ever breaks the uniform tranquillity.įrom the listless repose of the place, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of Sleepy Hollow. Not far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley among high hills which is one of the quietest places in the whole world. This name was given by the good housewives of the adjacent country from the inveterate propensity of their husbands to linger about the village tavern on market days. In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail and implored the protection of Saint Nicholas, there lies a small market town which is generally known by the name of Tarry Town.
